GE Dryer E8 — Drive motor / power supply fault
GE Dryer · Error code E8
What E8 Means
The control reports a fault on the drive motor or its power supply circuit. The drum won't tumble or starts then stops.
Symptoms
- E8 on display
- Drum won't turn
- Humming with no rotation
- Motor starts then trips off
Common Causes
Mechanical load pulls motor amps high; control trips.
Open winding or worn brushes/centrifugal switch.
Belt tangled around the motor pulley loads the motor.
Motor relay or sense circuit on the board has failed.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the dryer.
- Spin the drum by hand — should rotate freely. Resistance means a seized bearing, belt jam, or blower wheel.
- Remove the belt and try to spin the motor shaft and blower wheel by hand. Stiff = replace the affected part.
- If everything spins freely, test the motor windings for continuity per the tech sheet.
- Reassemble and retest.
- If the motor and mechanical path are good, replace the main control board.
