GE Dryer E1 — Inlet thermistor open circuit

GE Dryer · Error code E1

What E1 Means

The control board has lost the signal from the inlet (drum) temperature sensor. The thermistor circuit is reading 'open' (infinite resistance), so the dryer can't measure inlet air temp and will stop or refuse to heat.

Symptoms

  • E1 flashes on display
  • Dryer stops mid-cycle
  • No heat or short cycles
  • Beeping with E1 at startup

Common Causes

1
Failed inlet thermistor

Resistance reads OL/infinite at room temp instead of ~10K ohms.

2
Loose or broken thermistor harness

Spade connectors backed off the thermistor or harness pinched/chafed.

3
Corroded connector pins

Moist laundry environments oxidize thermistor terminals over time.

4
Failed main control board

Sensor input circuit on the board is dead even with a good thermistor.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the dryer for 5 minutes to clear the code.
  2. Remove the back panel (or top, depending on model) to access the inlet thermistor near the heater housing.
  3. Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance with a multimeter — should read roughly 10K ohms at room temp.
  4. If OL/infinite, replace the inlet thermistor.
  5. If resistance is correct, inspect the harness for breaks and reseat the connector at the board.
  6. Restore power and run a timed dry. If E1 returns with a verified-good thermistor, replace the main control board.
