GE Dryer E3 — Outlet (exhaust) thermistor open
GE Dryer · Error code E3
What E3 Means
The exhaust thermistor circuit is reading open. The dryer can't track outlet air temperature for Sensor Dry, so the cycle ends early or refuses to run.
Most Likely Fix
Outlet thermistor / restricted exhaust
Tools: vent brush, vacuum
Diagnose first: Most often a clogged lint screen, lint trap housing, or exhaust duct causing high exhaust temps. Clean vent fully before replacing the thermistor.

Symptoms
- E3 on display
- Sensor Dry cycles end almost immediately
- Clothes come out wet
- Dryer beeps E3 at start of cycle
Common Causes
Reads OL/infinite at room temp instead of ~10K ohms.
Plug worked loose during transport or prior service.
Wire fatigue near the door switch or blower housing.
ADC channel for outlet sensor has failed.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the dryer.
- Remove the lower front panel and locate the outlet thermistor on the blower housing.
- Measure resistance — expect roughly 10K ohms at room temp. OL = replace.
- Reseat the connector and inspect the harness back to the control board.
- Reassemble and test Sensor Dry on a damp load.
- If E3 returns with a known-good thermistor and harness, replace the main control board.
