GE Dryer E4 — Outlet thermistor shorted
GE Dryer · Error code E4
What E4 Means
The outlet temperature sensor is reading a dead short. The board sees an impossible high temperature and shuts the heat down for safety.
Symptoms
- E4 on display
- Heat cuts out or never engages
- Cycle stops shortly after start
- Sensor Dry won't complete
Common Causes
Internal short, often after a high-heat event from blocked venting.
Wire insulation worn where the harness crosses a sheet-metal edge.
Conductive lint paste bridging the sensor pins.
Sensor input on board locked at short reading.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the dryer and clean any lint from around the blower and outlet sensor.
- Disconnect the outlet thermistor and measure resistance — near 0 ohms = replace.
- Inspect harness routing for chafe damage; repair or replace as needed.
- Verify the exhaust vent is clear end-to-end — a blocked vent often pre-cooks the thermistor.
- Reassemble, restore power, and run a timed dry to confirm.
- If E4 persists, replace the main control board.
