GE Dryer E4 — Outlet thermistor shorted

GE Dryer · Error code E4

What E4 Means

The outlet temperature sensor is reading a dead short. The board sees an impossible high temperature and shuts the heat down for safety.

Symptoms

  • E4 on display
  • Heat cuts out or never engages
  • Cycle stops shortly after start
  • Sensor Dry won't complete

Common Causes

1
Shorted outlet thermistor

Internal short, often after a high-heat event from blocked venting.

2
Harness shorted to chassis

Wire insulation worn where the harness crosses a sheet-metal edge.

3
Lint-packed connector

Conductive lint paste bridging the sensor pins.

4
Failed main control board

Sensor input on board locked at short reading.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the dryer and clean any lint from around the blower and outlet sensor.
  2. Disconnect the outlet thermistor and measure resistance — near 0 ohms = replace.
  3. Inspect harness routing for chafe damage; repair or replace as needed.
  4. Verify the exhaust vent is clear end-to-end — a blocked vent often pre-cooks the thermistor.
  5. Reassemble, restore power, and run a timed dry to confirm.
  6. If E4 persists, replace the main control board.
