KitchenAid Dryer F28 — Moisture Sensor Fault

KitchenAid Dryer · Error code F28

What F28 Means

The moisture sensor strips inside the drum are reading out of expected range. Automatic cycles cannot detect dryness accurately.

Symptoms

  • F28 code
  • Auto cycles end too soon
  • Clothes still wet at end of cycle

Common Causes

1
Fabric softener buildup on sensor bars

Insulating film prevents contact

2
Broken wire to moisture sensor

Harness pinched between drum and bulkhead

3
Failed sensor strips

Worn through or corroded

4
ACU fault

Sensor input circuit damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Open the door and locate the two metal strips on the front bulkhead.
  2. Scrub them with a non-abrasive pad and a little rubbing alcohol or vinegar.
  3. Run a Timed Dry cycle to test — if F28 returns only on auto, sensor or wiring is the next suspect.
  4. Unplug, pull the front panel, and inspect the harness to the sensor.
  5. Replace the sensor bar/harness assembly if damaged.
