GE Washer E42 — Door Lock Will Not Unlock

GE Washer · Error code E42

What E42 Means

Control commanded the door to unlock at end of cycle, but the door latch assembly didn't release. Washer is stuck locked.

Symptoms

  • Door stays locked after cycle ends
  • E42 on display
  • Cannot start a new cycle

Common Causes

1
Failed door lock / latch assembly

Solenoid or wax motor in the latch failed mechanically.

2
Broken door strike or bent door

Latch can't disengage because the strike is binding.

3
Control board lock driver fault

Board not sending the unlock signal.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the washer for 60 seconds, then restore power.
  2. Try Drain & Spin to release residual water — many GE units won't unlock with water in the tub.
  3. If still locked, manually release via the pump-filter access door pull-cord (front-load models).
  4. Inspect the door strike for damage; replace if bent.
  5. Replace the door lock assembly if it won't release on command.
  6. If new lock doesn't fix it, replace the main control board.
