Chamberlain Garage Door Opener 1-5 — Safety sensor wires reversed or shorted

Chamberlain Garage Door Opener · Error code 1-5

What 1-5 Means

The safety sensor circuit detects a short or polarity reversal. Often the white and white-with-black wires are swapped at one sensor or pinched.

Symptoms

  • 1 flash then 5 flashes
  • Neither sensor LED illuminates
  • Door will not close from remote

Common Causes

1
Sensor wires reversed

White and white-with-black swapped at one sensor.

2
Short to ground in sensor wire

Insulation cut by staple against metal track.

3
Failed sensor shorting the line

Internal short in one of the sensors.

How to Fix It

  1. At each sensor, verify white wire goes to white terminal and white-with-black goes to the marked terminal — they must match on both ends.
  2. Inspect the entire wire run for damaged insulation; replace damaged sections.
  3. Disconnect one sensor at a time at the motor head. If the code clears with one disconnected, that sensor is faulty.
  4. Replace the failed sensor pair (sold as a set).
