F5 Serious Moderate DIY

Whirlpool Oven F5 — Generic door lock / self-clean fault

Whirlpool Oven · Error code F5

What F5 Means

On older Whirlpool ovens that don't display the E sub-code, a plain F5 means the door-locking system isn't reporting the expected state. Almost always tied to Self Clean.

Symptoms

  • F5 on display, usually when starting Self Clean
  • Door stays locked after the cycle ends, or won't lock to start
  • Latch motor may not run at all

Common Causes

1
Failed door latch motor

Latch motor doesn't drive to the locked/unlocked position.

2
Stuck latch mechanism

Grease, debris, or a bent latch arm prevents full travel.

3
Bad latch microswitch

Switch can't report 'locked' or 'unlocked' to the control.

4
Failed control board

If latch hardware tests good, the EOC's latch driver or input has failed.

How to Fix It

  1. Let the oven cool completely, then cut power at the breaker.
  2. Access the latch from the top of the range (lift cooktop) or front trim (wall oven).
  3. Manually move the latch through its full range and clean grease from the slide.
  4. Test the latch motor and microswitch per the tech sheet inside the storage drawer.
  5. Replace the latch assembly if motor or switch is bad.
  6. If a known-good latch still throws F5, replace the electronic oven control board.
