Whirlpool Microwave F5 — Shorted Humidity Sensor

Whirlpool Microwave · Error code F5

What F5 Means

The humidity sensor circuit has been shorted for more than 5 seconds. Older OTR fault chart; on newer models the equivalent is F4E4 or F5E0/E1.

Symptoms

  • F5 on the display
  • Sensor cook modes fail
  • Microwave still cooks manually

Common Causes

1
Internally shorted humidity sensor

Heat and grease eventually short the element.

2
Pinched or melted sensor wire

A wire pinched at install can short to the cabinet.

3
Failed control board

Less common; verify the sensor and wiring first.

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle at the breaker for 1 minute.
  2. Unplug the microwave and disconnect the humidity sensor; the F5 should clear with the sensor disconnected.
  3. Check the sensor wiring along its full length for melted insulation or pinches.
  4. Install a new humidity sensor and retest a sensor-cook cycle.
  5. Replace the electronic control only if a new sensor and harness don't clear the code.
