Whirlpool Microwave F1E5 — Inverter Internal Fault
Whirlpool Microwave · Error code F1E5
What F1E5 Means
The high-voltage inverter board has reported an internal fault to the main control. On inverter-equipped Whirlpool/KitchenAid microwaves this almost always means a failed inverter, sometimes the HV diode that feeds it.
Symptoms
- F1E5 on the display
- Microwave fan and light work but food does not heat
- Loud buzz or pop followed by the error
- Burnt-electronics smell from the vent
Common Causes
Most common cause; the inverter replaces the old transformer + capacitor and is a single sealed assembly.
A shorted diode can drag the inverter down and trigger F1E5 before the inverter itself fails.
An end-of-life magnetron can load the inverter abnormally and throw F1E5.
How to Fix It
- Stop using the microwave. The HV section stores a lethal charge — this is the one repair where 'just try it' is not OK.
- Power down at the breaker for 1 minute and retest. F1E5 that returns immediately is a real hardware fault, not a glitch.
- If you are not trained on microwave HV discharge, stop here and call service. The capacitor must be discharged with an insulated resistor before any HV component is touched.
- For trained DIY: unplug, discharge the HV cap, then verify continuity of the HV diode (should conduct one way only). A shorted-both-ways diode is the cheap fix.
- If the diode is good, replace the inverter board for the model. Magnetron is the last resort after inverter and diode check out.
