F3 Moderate Easy DIY

Whirlpool Microwave F3 — Key Held Too Long

Whirlpool Microwave · Error code F3

What F3 Means

The control detected a key pressed continuously for over one minute, or a humidity sensor reading outside the valid range on older models. Often a stuck-finger / stuck-button rather than hardware failure.

Symptoms

  • F3 on the display
  • Beeping after the keypad is touched
  • Microwave will not accept any new input

Common Causes

1
Key physically stuck or being held down

Object resting against the keypad, or grease holding a button down.

2
Failed membrane switch

A keypad with internal shorts will look like a held key to the control.

3
Humidity sensor out of range (older models)

On models where F3 is humidity-related, the sensor itself or its connector is at fault.

How to Fix It

  1. Remove anything resting on or against the front panel.
  2. Wipe the keypad with a damp cloth and a little isopropyl alcohol; press each key several times.
  3. Power-cycle at the breaker for 1 minute.
  4. If F3 stays, pull the control panel and reseat the keypad ribbon at the control board.
  5. Replace the membrane switch if the code returns after a clean reseat. On older models that read F3 as humidity-related, replace the humidity sensor.
