Whirlpool Microwave F2E1 — Stuck Key / Keypad Fault

Whirlpool Microwave · Error code F2E1

What F2E1 Means

The control thinks a button has been held down longer than allowed, or the keypad membrane is shorted. The unit will not accept input until the short clears.

Symptoms

  • F2E1 on the display
  • Microwave beeps repeatedly and refuses input
  • Some buttons feel mushy or stick down
  • Pressing Cancel does nothing

Common Causes

1
Stuck or contaminated keypad button

Grease and steam get under the membrane right above the cooktop; a single stuck key trips F2E1.

2
Failed membrane switch (touchpad)

The flat ribbon and dome contacts wear out — common on older OTR units.

3
Loose keypad ribbon at the control board

Vibration or a recent door slam can back the ribbon out of its ZIF connector.

How to Fix It

  1. Power down at the breaker for 1 minute and restore. If F2E1 doesn't come back, you had a transient stuck key — keep an eye on it.
  2. Clean the keypad with a soft cloth and isopropyl alcohol; press every button 20–30 times to free anything sticky underneath.
  3. If it returns, pull the microwave's control panel per the model's tech sheet and reseat the keypad ribbon into the control board.
  4. If the code still returns, replace the membrane switch (keypad/touchpad). It is a separate part from the control board on most Whirlpool OTRs.
  5. Replace the control board only if a new keypad doesn't fix it.
