Whirlpool Dishwasher F3E1 — Thermistor/OWI Sensor Open

Whirlpool Dishwasher · Error code F3E1

What F3E1 Means

The control sees an open circuit on the thermistor or Optical Water Indicator (OWI/turbidity sensor) in the sump. The dishwasher cannot verify water temperature or clarity.

Symptoms

  • F3E1 on display
  • Cycle stalls or stops mid-wash
  • Poor cleaning performance
  • Dishwasher may skip heating

Common Causes

1
Disconnected or damaged thermistor/OWI wire harness

Most common cause — connector at the sump shakes loose or a wire chafes.

2
Failed OWI/thermistor sensor

The combined sensor in the sump has gone open-circuit.

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the lower dish rack and the chopper/filter assembly to expose the sump.
  2. Pull the toe-kick and trace the wiring from the control board to the thermistor/OWI in the sump.
  3. Unplug and reseat both ends of the harness. Inspect for chafe spots, especially where the harness crosses the frame.
  4. Run service diagnostic from the tech sheet. If F3E1 persists with the harness verified good, replace the OWI/thermistor assembly.
  5. Reassemble and run a Normal cycle to verify.
