E1 Moderate Easy DIY

Whirlpool Dishwasher E1 — Fill / Water Supply Problem (legacy code)

Whirlpool Dishwasher · Error code E1

What E1 Means

Shown on older single-digit-display Whirlpool dishwashers. The dishwasher could not fill — supply, float, or drain-siphon issue.

Symptoms

  • E1 on display
  • Dishwasher will not fill
  • Cycle aborts at fill phase

Common Causes

1
Water supply valve closed

Under-sink shutoff not open.

2
Stuck overfill float

Float in front-right of tub stuck up.

3
Improper drain hose loop (siphoning)

Drain hose not connected at least 20" above floor — water siphons out as fast as it fills.

4
Control needs reset

Power-cycle for 1 minute often clears a one-time E1.

How to Fix It

  1. Verify the under-sink water valve is fully open.
  2. Lift the overfill float in the front-right of the tub and confirm it moves freely.
  3. Pull the dishwasher and confirm the drain hose has a high loop secured under the counter, or connects above the disposer trap at least 20" above the floor.
  4. Power-cycle the dishwasher at the breaker for 1 full minute.
  5. If E1 returns, follow F6E1 troubleshooting (inlet valve and strainer).
