Sud Minor Easy DIY

LG Washer Sud (SUdS) — Excessive foam detected

LG Washer · Error code Sud

What Sud Means

The washer detected too much foam and entered a 2-hour suds-reducing routine. Usually a detergent type/dose issue, not a hardware fault.

Symptoms

  • Sud or SUdS on the display
  • Cycle time extends by ~2 hours
  • Visible foam climbing the door glass
  • Cycle pauses to add rinses

Common Causes

1
Non-HE detergent

Regular detergent makes 2-3x the foam of HE — never use it in a front-load or HE top-load.

2
Too much HE detergent

Even HE soap over-foams if dosed past the manufacturer line — 1-2 tbsp is plenty for a normal load.

3
Soft water amplifies suds

Soft water dramatically increases foam — cut dosage in half.

4
Detergent residue in tub/dispenser

Buildup from years of over-dosing keeps releasing foam every cycle.

5
Clogged drain or pump filter

Slow drain leaves soapy water in the tub between cycles.

6
Faulty pressure sensor (rare)

Sensor misreads foam as a leak/fill issue.

How to Fix It

  1. Let the suds-reducing cycle finish — it WILL clear on its own; don't interrupt unless leaking.
  2. Switch to HE-only detergent and dose 1-2 tablespoons per normal load (not the cap fill line).
  3. Run an empty Tub Clean cycle with a tub-cleaner tablet to clear residue.
  4. Pull the dispenser drawer and rinse it under hot water; scrub the back recess with an old toothbrush.
  5. Open the lower drain pump filter and clear lint/debris over a shallow pan.
  6. If Sud appears with the correct dose of HE detergent, suspect the pressure sensor or hose.
