LG Microwave F-2 — Keypad / touch panel shorted

LG Microwave · Error code F-2

What F-2 Means

The control senses a stuck or shorted key on the membrane touch panel for more than ~60 seconds. The microwave will not accept input until the short clears.

Symptoms

  • F-2 on display, often shortly after power-up
  • Buttons unresponsive or one key registers continuously
  • Beeping with no input

Common Causes

1
Moisture / grease under the membrane

Steam from cooking has crept behind the touch panel and is bridging traces.

2
Bulged or warped membrane

Heat or age has separated the laminated layers, pressing a button mechanically.

3
Damaged ribbon cable

Flat ribbon to the control board is creased, oxidized, or partially unseated.

4
Main control board input fault

Failure on the keypad-scan circuit of the PCB.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug for 5 minutes — sometimes condensation behind the panel evaporates and the fault clears.
  2. Visually inspect the touch panel for bulges, cracks, or trapped moisture.
  3. Remove the control panel assembly and unplug the keypad ribbon from the control board.
  4. With the keypad disconnected, restore power briefly. If F-2 disappears, the keypad is the culprit. If it returns, the control board is at fault.
  5. Replace the touch panel / keypad assembly if isolated to the keypad.
  6. If the board is faulty (panel proves good), replace the main control board.
  7. Reassemble and test every button.
