What Error 17 Means
Robot lost track of its location or couldn't find its way back to where it started/the Home Base.
Symptoms
- 'Error 17' voice prompt
- Robot stops in unfamiliar area
- Couldn't dock at end of cleaning
Common Causes
Robot left a room it can't get back to.
Dock was relocated mid-cycle, breaking the mental map.
Major changes to the room confuse vSLAM-based navigation (i/j/s series).
Top-mounted camera covered in dust can't navigate visually.
vSLAM models need ambient light to navigate.
How to Fix It
- Carry robot back to Home Base manually.
- Leave doors open during cleaning cycles.
- Keep Home Base in a permanent location with 1.5 ft clearance on each side and 4 ft in front.
- On i/j/s/900 series, wipe the camera lens on top of the robot with a soft dry cloth.
- Ensure rooms have adequate ambient light during scheduled cleans.
- Re-train smart maps in the iRobot app if room layout changed significantly.
