Washer Not Filling With Water — Causes and Fixes
When a washer won't fill (or fills very slowly), the cause is almost always on the water-supply side — valves, hoses, or the inlet screens — and most are quick checks before the inlet valve itself.
1. Check the Supply Valves
The hot and cold faucets behind the washer must be fully open. A partly closed valve is a surprisingly common cause of slow or no fill. Open both all the way.
2. Clean the Inlet Screens
Where the fill hoses connect to the back of the washer, there are small mesh screens that trap sediment and slowly clog. Turn off the water, unscrew the hoses, and clean or replace the screens. This is the most common fixable cause of slow fill.
3. Straighten the Fill Hoses
A kinked or pinched fill hose restricts flow. Pull the washer out enough to confirm the hoses run freely without sharp bends.
4. Test the Water Inlet Valve
If the valves are open, screens are clean, and hoses are clear but it still won't fill, the electric water inlet valve on the washer has likely failed (it won't open). It is a moderate DIY replacement and a common wear part.
