Refrigerator Leaking Water on the Floor — Causes and Fixes
A puddle in front of or under the refrigerator has two usual suspects: a clogged defrost drain (most common) or a problem with the water supply line to the ice maker/dispenser. Here is how to tell them apart and fix each.
1. Clogged Defrost Drain (Most Common)
During the auto-defrost cycle, melted frost is supposed to run down a drain to a pan under the fridge. When that drain clogs with ice or gunk, the water overflows inside and leaks onto the floor — often pooling under the crisper drawers or out the bottom. You may also see a sheet of ice on the freezer floor.
How to Clear the Defrost Drain
Empty the freezer floor and find the small drain hole (usually at the back of the freezer floor or under the rear panel). Flush it with warm water using a turkey baster, and gently clear ice or debris with a pipe cleaner or warm-water flush. For a frozen drain, a 24-hour unplug-and-thaw clears it. A clogged drain is the number-one cause of fridge floor leaks.
2. Frozen or Leaking Water Line
If your fridge has a water dispenser or ice maker, the supply line can leak at the connection behind the fridge, or the fill tube can crack. Pull the fridge out and check the water line and the shutoff valve connection for drips. Tighten or replace leaking fittings.
3. Overflowing or Cracked Drain Pan
The drain pan under the fridge can crack or get knocked out of position, dripping onto the floor. It is rarely the cause but worth a look if the drain and water line are fine.
