Range Hood / Vent Fan Not Working or Weak

4 min read

A range hood that barely moves air or has gone silent is usually choked with grease or has a tired motor. Most of the fix is cleaning; the rest is a straightforward part.

1. Clean the Grease Filter

The metal mesh filter clogs with grease and chokes airflow — this is the number-one cause of weak suction. Pop it out and run it through the dishwasher or soak it in hot soapy water with a little degreaser. Clean it monthly if you cook often.

2. Clean the Fan Blade and Housing

Grease builds up on the blower wheel and housing, unbalancing the fan and reducing airflow (and making noise). With power off, wipe the blade and inside of the hood with a degreaser.

3. Dead Fan: Motor or Switch

If the fan won't run at all but the light works, the fan motor or the speed switch has likely failed. If neither the fan nor light works, check the outlet/wiring and the breaker. A replacement blower motor is a common part.

4. Recirculating vs Vented

If your hood recirculates (no duct outside), it relies on a charcoal filter that loses effectiveness — replace it every few months. A recirculating hood will never move air as well as a vented one even when working.

FAQ

Why is my range hood fan weak?

Almost always a grease-clogged filter and blower wheel. Clean the metal filter and wipe the fan blade; replace the charcoal filter on recirculating hoods.

Why did my range hood fan stop working but the light still works?

The fan motor or the speed switch has likely failed. If both fan and light are dead, check the wiring and breaker.
