How to Replace a Refrigerator Water Filter
Replacing the refrigerator water filter every six months keeps your water and ice clean and prevents the weak-flow and no-ice problems a clogged filter causes. It is a two-minute job once you know where the filter is.
Find Your Filter and Model Number
Filters live in one of a few spots: inside the fridge at the top-right or rear, in the bottom-front grille (push or twist type), or in the upper-left corner. Note the filter's part number (printed on the old filter) so you buy the correct replacement — using an off-brand that fits poorly can leak or under-filter.
Swap the Filter
Twist-style: turn the old filter a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it out, then insert the new one and turn clockwise until it locks. Push-style (grille): press the eject button or push in and the old one pops out; push the new one in until it clicks. No tools needed, and most are no-spill designs.
Flush and Reset
Run 2-4 gallons of water through the dispenser to clear air and carbon fines (the water may sputter and look cloudy at first — that is normal). Then reset the filter indicator: hold the "Filter" or "Reset" button for 3 seconds until the light turns from red/orange back to blue/green.
