How to Clean and Freshen a Smelly Garbage Disposal

3 min read

A garbage disposal that smells is coated in food gunk — mostly on the underside of the rubber splash guard and inside the grind chamber. A few minutes of cleaning kills the odor without harsh chemicals.

1. Scrub the Splash Guard

The rubber splash guard (the flaps at the drain opening) traps the most gunk on its underside, and it is the number-one source of disposal smell. With the disposal OFF, use a brush or an old toothbrush with dish soap to scrub the underside of each flap. Never put your hand down the disposal.

2. Grind Ice and Salt

Drop a couple cups of ice and a half cup of coarse salt down the disposal, run cold water, and turn it on. The ice and salt scour food residue off the grinding components and blades. You will hear it working.

3. Freshen With Citrus

Grind a few citrus peels (lemon, lime, or orange) with cold water running. The oils leave a clean, fresh smell and help cut grease. Do this weekly to keep it fresh.

4. Habits That Prevent Smell

Always run cold water during and for a few seconds after grinding, avoid putting grease and fibrous/starchy foods (potato peels, pasta) down it, and run it regularly so food does not sit and rot.

FAQ

Why does my garbage disposal smell so bad?

Food gunk on the underside of the rubber splash guard and in the grind chamber. Scrub the splash guard, grind ice and salt, then freshen with citrus peels.

Can I pour bleach down my garbage disposal?

It is not recommended — bleach can harden grease and damage seals. Use ice and salt to scour, citrus to freshen, and a disposal cleaner if needed.
