Front-Load Washer Door Won't Open — How to Fix It
A front-load washer locks its door during operation and won't open until conditions are safe. If the door is stuck shut, here is how to release it without forcing it.
1. Wait for the Lock to Release
The door stays locked for a minute or two after a cycle ends as a safety delay. Wait a few minutes after the cycle finishes and try again — many "stuck" doors just need that pause.
2. Drain Remaining Water
The door won't unlock if there is water in the drum (to prevent a flood). If the cycle stopped with water inside, run a Drain/Spin cycle, or drain it manually via the pump filter at the front-bottom. Once the water is out, the door releases.
3. Power-Cycle the Washer
Unplug the washer for a minute and plug it back in. This resets a stuck door-lock controller. On some models, starting and immediately canceling a cycle prompts the lock to release.
4. Use the Manual Release
Most front-loaders have a manual door-lock release — a string or tab behind the front-bottom access panel (where the pump filter is). Reach in and pull the release to open the door. Check your model's manual for its exact location.

FAQ
Wait a few minutes for the safety lock to release, drain any water (run a spin/drain or use the pump filter), or power-cycle the washer. If still stuck, use the manual door-release behind the front-bottom access panel.
Usually leftover water in the drum or the normal post-cycle lock delay. Drain the water and wait a couple minutes; if it persists, the door lock may have failed.
