Dishwasher Soap Door Not Opening / Detergent Left Behind

3 min read

If you open the dishwasher to find the detergent cup still full or the soap caked in, the dispenser either did not open or the detergent did not dissolve. Here is how to tell which and fix it.

1. Make Sure the Door Isn't Blocked

A tall item on the bottom rack (a pot, a cutting board) or the lower spray arm hitting tall dishes can physically block the detergent door from springing open. Reload so nothing is in front of the dispenser door.

2. Clean a Sticky Dispenser

Old detergent residue gums up the dispenser flap so it won't latch shut or pop open. Clean the cup and the hinge thoroughly, and make sure it isn't damp when you fill it (wet detergent sticks). Use fresh detergent — old caked detergent does not dissolve well.

3. Check Water Temperature

Detergent needs hot water (around 120°F) to dissolve. If the incoming water is cold, the detergent clumps and is left behind. Run the kitchen hot tap before starting the dishwasher.

4. Wax Motor / Bi-Metal Release

The dispenser door is held shut by a small wax motor or bi-metal actuator that releases mid-cycle. If the door never opens (and nothing is blocking it), that actuator has likely failed — an inexpensive part on most dishwashers.

FAQ

Why is my dishwasher not dissolving the detergent?

Usually cold fill water, old/damp detergent, or the dispenser door being blocked by a tall item. Run the hot tap first, use fresh detergent, and reload so nothing blocks the dispenser.

Why won't my dishwasher soap door open?

Either something is blocking it, the hinge is gummed with old detergent, or the wax-motor actuator that releases it has failed. Clean it and clear obstructions; replace the dispenser if the door never opens.
