Dishwasher Beeping or Lights Flashing — What It Means

3 min read

When a dishwasher beeps repeatedly or the lights flash in a pattern, it's signaling an error or an interrupted cycle. The blink pattern or code points to the cause — here are the common ones and how to clear them.

First: Note the Pattern or Code

Newer dishwashers show an error code; older ones blink the "Clean" or cycle light a certain number of times. Count the blinks or note the code and check it against our dishwasher code pages — it tells you exactly what's wrong (drain, leak, heating, etc.).

Interrupted Cycle (Most Common)

Opening the door mid-cycle, or a brief power blip, makes many dishwashers beep or flash to tell you the cycle was interrupted. Simply close the door firmly and press Start to resume, or cancel and restart. This is the most common, harmless cause.

Drain or Leak Warning

A flashing pattern can mean the dishwasher didn't drain (clean the filter — see our drain guide) or it detected water in the base pan (a leak — it shuts down and pumps to prevent flooding). A leak warning that won't clear means you need to find the drip.

Reset It

To clear a stuck beeping/flashing dishwasher, do a hard reset: turn it off at the breaker (or unplug) for a few minutes, then restore power. If the code returns immediately, it's a real fault to diagnose, not just a glitch.

FAQ

Why is my dishwasher beeping?

Most often the cycle was interrupted (door opened or a power blip) — close the door and press Start. A repeating beep or blink pattern can also signal a drain or leak error; note the pattern and look up the code.

How do I reset a flashing dishwasher?

Turn it off at the breaker (or unplug) for a few minutes, then restore power. If the flashing/code comes right back, it's a real fault — check the error against our code pages.
