Whirlpool Washer F5E1 — Lid Switch Open / Lid Not Closed

Whirlpool Washer · Error code F5E1

What F5E1 Means

The control thinks the lid is open when it expects it closed. On top-loaders this usually means the lid switch is reporting open, the magnet on the lid is missing or misaligned, or the lid striker isn't engaging the lock fully.

Symptoms

  • Washer won't start a cycle
  • F5 E1 flashes when you press Start
  • Lid lock light may be off or blinking
  • Cycle pauses immediately after pressing Start

Common Causes

1
Lid not closed completely

Laundry, a hose, or a sock is pinched in the lid seal preventing it from fully seating.

2
Missing or broken lid magnet/strike

The magnet that tells the switch the lid is closed has fallen off or the plastic striker is cracked.

3
Faulty lid switch / lock assembly

The microswitch inside the lid lock has failed and reads open even when the lid is shut.

4
Wiring harness loose

Connector between the lid lock and main control (CCU) is unseated or pinched.

How to Fix It

  1. Open and re-close the lid firmly, making sure nothing is caught in the seal.
  2. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes to reset the control, then plug back in.
  3. Inspect the lid for a missing magnet or broken striker — replace if visibly damaged.
  4. Run the lid switch test in service-diagnostic mode (model-specific button sequence in the tech sheet) and watch the switch toggle as you open/close the lid.
  5. If the switch doesn't change state, replace the lid lock/switch assembly.
  6. If the new switch still throws F5E1, check the harness from the lid lock to the main control board for continuity.
