What F21 Means

F21 means the washer took too long to drain. The control board expected the water out within a set time and flagged a drain problem. Common on Whirlpool/Maytag/Kenmore front-loaders.

Symptoms

  • Water left in the drum
  • Cycle stops and shows F21 (often after "Sd")
  • Long pause near the rinse/spin

Common Causes

Clogged drain pump filter

The filter/trap behind the front-bottom panel collects coins, lint, and debris. #1 cause.

Clogged or kinked drain hose

A blockage where the hose meets the standpipe.

Failed drain pump

A pump that does not move water.

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and unplug the washer.
  2. Open the front-bottom access panel, place a towel/tray, and open the drain filter slowly.
  3. Remove all debris from the filter and housing.
  4. Check the drain hose for clogs and kinks at the standpipe.
  5. Replace the drain pump if cleaning does not restore draining.
