Whirlpool Refrigerator OP — Open Thermistor Circuit

Whirlpool Refrigerator · Error code OP

What OP Means

'OP' indicates an open temperature sensor circuit — either a thermistor is fully open (failed) or its harness is unplugged. The control cannot read that compartment's temperature.

Symptoms

  • 'OP' on display
  • Compartment runs too warm or too cold
  • Temperature setting unresponsive
  • Display may also show which compartment is affected

Common Causes

1
Disconnected thermistor harness

Connector unseated after service or vibration.

2
Failed thermistor

Sensor element has gone fully open.

3
Broken sensor lead

Wire severed at the crimp.

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
  2. Identify the affected compartment from the display (fresh food, freezer, drawer).
  3. Locate that compartment's thermistor and disconnect it.
  4. Ohm-test — open reading confirms a failed sensor. About 10kΩ at room temp means the sensor is OK and the issue is wiring.
  5. Replace the sensor or repair the wire as appropriate.
