Whirlpool Refrigerator OP — Open Thermistor Circuit
Whirlpool Refrigerator · Error code OP
What OP Means
'OP' indicates an open temperature sensor circuit — either a thermistor is fully open (failed) or its harness is unplugged. The control cannot read that compartment's temperature.
Symptoms
- 'OP' on display
- Compartment runs too warm or too cold
- Temperature setting unresponsive
- Display may also show which compartment is affected
Common Causes
1
Disconnected thermistor harness
Connector unseated after service or vibration.
2
Failed thermistor
Sensor element has gone fully open.
3
Broken sensor lead
Wire severed at the crimp.
How to Fix It
- Power-cycle the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
- Identify the affected compartment from the display (fresh food, freezer, drawer).
- Locate that compartment's thermistor and disconnect it.
- Ohm-test — open reading confirms a failed sensor. About 10kΩ at room temp means the sensor is OK and the issue is wiring.
- Replace the sensor or repair the wire as appropriate.
