Whirlpool Refrigerator F3 E1 — Fresh Food Thermistor Fault
Whirlpool Refrigerator · Error code F3 E1
What F3 E1 Means
The main control detected an open or shorted fresh food compartment temperature sensor (thermistor). With no valid reading, the fridge cannot regulate cooling correctly and may run constantly or not cool at all.
Symptoms
- Flashing 'F' on display
- Fresh food too warm or too cold
- Compressor runs continuously or short-cycles
- Temperature display will not adjust
Common Causes
The 10kΩ NTC sensor has drifted out of range or gone open-circuit.
Connector to the sensor at the control board has worked loose.
Wire was crushed during a drawer slide or shelf install.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the refrigerator for 5 minutes and restore power. If F3 E1 returns, continue diagnosis.
- Locate the fresh food thermistor (usually clipped near the top rear of the fresh food compartment behind a cover).
- Disconnect the sensor and read resistance with a multimeter — should be about 10kΩ at room temperature (~77°F).
- If resistance is open, near zero, or wildly off, replace the thermistor.
- If the sensor reads correctly, inspect and reseat the connector at the main control board on the back of the cabinet.
- If wiring and sensor both check good, replace the main control board.
