Maytag Washer F9E1 — Long drain / drain pump fault

Maytag Washer · Error code F9E1

What F9E1 Means

The washer did not drain to the expected level within the allowed time (typically ~8–10 minutes). Most common Maytag error.

Symptoms

  • F9E1 on display
  • Water left in tub at end of cycle
  • Wet clothes after spin
  • Pump runs continuously

Common Causes

1
Clogged drain pump filter / coin trap

Sock, coin, lint, or hair plugging pump intake.

2
Kinked or clogged drain hose

Hose pinched behind washer or standpipe clog.

3
Drain hose installed too high

Standpipe over ~96" or below 30" causes siphon/back-pressure issues.

4
Failed drain pump motor

Pump impeller seized or motor open.

5
Foreign object jamming impeller

Underwire or coin in pump housing.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Open the front access panel (front-load) or tip back (top-load) and locate the pump filter.
  3. Place towels — water WILL spill — and unscrew the filter; clear debris.
  4. Pull the washer out and inspect drain hose for kinks, crushed sections, or clogs.
  5. Verify standpipe is 30–96" high and not sealed airtight to hose.
  6. Spin pump impeller by hand — should turn freely; if seized, replace pump.
  7. Test pump motor for continuity (~10–20Ω); replace if open.
  8. Reassemble and run a Drain + Spin to verify.
