Maytag Washer F7E5 — Shifter (splutch) fault

Maytag Washer · Error code F7E5

What F7E5 Means

On top-load VMW/Bravos washers the shifter assembly (splutch) moves between wash and spin modes. The control detects the shifter did not change position correctly.

Symptoms

  • F7E5 on display
  • Washer agitates but won't spin
  • Loud clunking from base
  • Stuck in one mode

Common Causes

1
Failed shifter actuator

Most common — the actuator motor or position sensor failed.

2
Broken splutch

Plastic splutch fork broken.

3
Loose harness to shifter

Connector under tub unseated.

4
Failed CCU output

Less common.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the washer and tip it back to access the underside.
  2. Locate the shifter actuator (small motor mounted on the gearcase).
  3. Disconnect harness, inspect for corrosion, reseat.
  4. Try the cycle again; if F7E5 returns, replace the shifter actuator.
  5. If shifter is new and still failing, inspect the splutch for cracks.
