Maytag Dishwasher F3E1 — Thermistor / OWI Sensor Failure
Maytag Dishwasher · Error code F3E1
What F3E1 Means
The temperature/optical water indicator sensor in the sump is reading out of range. The control can't verify water temperature or soil level, so it stops or short-cycles.
Symptoms
- Cycle ends early
- Dishes come out cold or dirty
- Long cycle times
- Heat dry doesn't work
Common Causes
The dual-purpose optical water indicator in the sump has drifted or shorted.
Scale coats the optic and mimics a dirty/failed reading.
Connector worked loose during service or shipping.
Less common — ACU input circuit failure.
How to Fix It
- Run an empty cycle with a cup of citric acid or dishwasher cleaner to descale the sump and OWI lens.
- If the fault returns, pull the lower rack and bottom spray arm and remove the sump cover to access the OWI sensor.
- Inspect the OWI lens for cloudiness; wipe it clean with a soft cloth — do not scratch it.
- Unplug and reseat the sensor harness.
- If symptoms persist, replace the OWI sensor (an inexpensive snap-in part).
- Re-run a Normal cycle and confirm the water heats fully.
