Er FF Serious Moderate DIY

LG Refrigerator Er FF — Freezer fan motor abnormality

LG Refrigerator · Error code Er FF

What Er FF Means

The freezer (evaporator) fan motor is not running, is running too slowly, or has no feedback signal — most commonly because frost has built up around the fan blade and locked it.

Symptoms

  • Er FF (or E FF) on display
  • Freezer warming, ice cream soft
  • Refrigerator side may also warm
  • Audible buzz then silence from freezer
  • Frost on the back panel inside freezer

Common Causes

1
Ice buildup locking the fan blade

Worn door gasket or door left ajar lets humid air in, frost grows on the evaporator fan.

2
Failed freezer fan motor

BLDC motor bearings seize or the Hall sensor fails — no feedback to the main board.

3
Defrost system failure

If the heater or bi-metal/fuse failed, the evaporator ices over and traps the fan.

4
Wiring harness fault

Pinched or corroded fan harness at the freezer rear panel.

5
Main control board

Less common — board not commanding/reading the fan correctly.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the refrigerator and empty the freezer (and ice bin).
  2. Open both doors and let the unit defrost for 8 hours minimum (24–72 hours if heavily iced).
  3. Towel out melt water as it appears so it doesn't pool on the floor.
  4. Plug back in and watch for 15–20 minutes — if Er FF returns immediately, the fan motor or harness is bad.
  5. Pull the freezer rear panel and spin the fan blade by hand; if it's stiff, replace the freezer fan motor.
  6. Inspect door gasket and hinge alignment so the door fully seals — otherwise frost will return.
  7. If the defrost heater is open or the bi-metal thermostat won't close cold, replace them as a set.
