LG Oven F16 — Lower oven over-temperature / sensor issue

LG Oven · Error code F16

What F16 Means

The lower-oven temperature exceeded the safe threshold or the lower sensor reported an impossible value the control treats as overheat. Element is shut down.

Symptoms

  • F16 or F-16 on display
  • Lower cavity very hot then shuts off
  • Lower oven will not restart
  • May trip after long bake or self-clean preheat

Common Causes

1
Welded lower bake-relay contacts

Element stayed energized past setpoint.

2
Shorted lower oven thermistor

Bad sensor told the board the oven was cold.

3
Failed main control board

Logic or relay drive failed.

4
Excessive ambient heat in the control bay

Blocked cooling vents allowed the PCB area to overheat.

How to Fix It

  1. Let the oven cool fully before any further use.
  2. Press CLEAR/OFF and power-cycle at the breaker for 60 seconds.
  3. If F16 returns, kill the breaker and unplug the lower thermistor; measure resistance — should be ~1080 Ω. Replace if shorted.
  4. Inspect the bake element for visible damage or arcing.
  5. Check that the cooling vents at the rear/top of the range are not blocked by foil, racks, or wall cabinets.
  6. If sensor checks good and overheat repeats, replace the main control board (welded relay).
