KitchenAid Dishwasher F3E1 — Thermistor / OWI Sensor Failure

KitchenAid Dishwasher · Error code F3E1

What F3E1 Means

The Optical Water Indicator (OWI) and thermistor sensor reports an out-of-range value to the control. The sensor measures wash water turbidity and temperature.

Symptoms

  • Dishes come out poorly cleaned
  • Cycle stops mid-wash
  • Dishes not heated/dried properly
  • F3E1 displayed or 3 flashes / 1 flash

Common Causes

1
Dirty OWI sensor lens

Hard-water film or food debris coats the optical lens in the sump.

2
Failed OWI sensor

Internal failure of the thermistor/optical sensor.

3
Wiring harness fault

Broken or unplugged harness between sensor and control board.

4
Failed main control board

Less common, board can't read a healthy sensor.

How to Fix It

  1. Power off at the breaker for 5 minutes.
  2. Pull the lower rack and remove the bottom filter assembly.
  3. Wipe the OWI sensor lens (small clear/blue lens in the sump) with vinegar and a soft cloth.
  4. Run a Cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or 2 cups of white vinegar.
  5. If F3E1 returns, pull the dishwasher and check the OWI sensor harness under the tub.
  6. Replace the OWI sensor if cleaning and reseating the harness don't clear the code.
  7. If a new sensor still throws F3E1, replace the main control board.
