Generac Generator 1902 — RPM Sensor Loss
Generac Generator · Error code 1902
What 1902 Means
Controller lost the engine RPM signal from the magnetic pickup or ignition module. Without a valid RPM reference the controller cannot safely run the engine and will shut it down.
Symptoms
- 1902 fault
- Engine cranks but shuts down immediately or fails to confirm start
- May follow a 1500/1505 overcrank
Common Causes
Sensor reading flywheel teeth has fallen out of adjustment or failed.
Rodent damage or chafed harness.
On units that derive RPM from ignition pulses.
Pickup sees inconsistent pulses if the flywheel timing is off.
How to Fix It
- Power down and pull the 7.5A fuse.
- Locate the magnetic pickup near the flywheel — verify the lock nut is tight and the air gap is correct (typically 0.010-0.015").
- Inspect the harness from pickup to controller for damage; repair any breaks.
- Ohm the pickup (typical 200-300 ohms) — replace if open or shorted.
- If wiring and pickup are good and 1902 persists, replace ignition module or escalate to dealer.
