What rF Means

The water filter has reached its end-of-life (6 months or ~170 gallons). Water and ice will still dispense but flow may slow. Cooling unaffected.

Symptoms

  • rF or 'Replace Filter' on display
  • Filter status light red
  • Slow water dispensing

Common Causes

Filter timer expired

GE counts months and/or gallons, whichever comes first.

Used unit, original filter still installed

Particularly common on newly bought used / open-box units.

How to Fix It

  1. Buy the correct GE filter for your model (XWF, XWFE, RPWFE, MWF, MSWF — check the existing filter or owner's manual).
  2. Twist out the old filter (typically a 90° counter-clockwise turn).
  3. Insert and lock the new one, then run 2 quarts of water through to purge air.
  4. Hold the Reset Water Filter button 3 seconds to clear rF.
