What Er Co Means

The main control board and the dispenser / UI board have lost serial communication. Most user functions go dark even though cooling may still work briefly. Often a wiring harness or board failure.

Symptoms

  • Er Co on display
  • Dispenser unresponsive
  • Display fading in and out
  • Temperature settings won't change

Common Causes

Loose / corroded ribbon connector at the dispenser

Door flex over years works the connector loose.

Pinched wire in the door hinge channel

Common on French-door models — wire breaks intermittently.

Dispenser UI board failed

Loss of regulated 5 V on the UI side kills the comms link.

Main control board failed

MCU comms peripheral dead.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the unit for 5 minutes to attempt a soft reset.
  2. Disassemble the dispenser to expose the ribbon connector — unplug, inspect for corrosion, reseat firmly.
  3. Open the freezer-door hinge cover and inspect for pinched / broken wires.
  4. If reseating doesn't restore comms, swap in a known-good dispenser UI board first (cheaper than main).
  5. If still failing, replace the main control board.
