Frigidaire Dryer E5C — Exhaust thermistor shorted / over temperature

Frigidaire Dryer · Error code E5C

What E5C Means

Control reads thermistor resistance too low or sees an over-temperature condition at the exhaust. Often the sensor is shorted, or airflow is severely restricted causing real overheat.

Symptoms

  • E5C shown on display
  • Dryer shuts down during cycle
  • Cabinet/exhaust hotter than normal
  • Long dry times

Common Causes

1
Clogged lint screen or vent duct

Restricted airflow drives real exhaust temp above limit.

2
Shorted exhaust thermistor

Sensor failed shorted, reads near 0 ohms.

3
Stuck-closed heating element relay

Element runs constantly even when control commands off.

4
Main control board fault

Bad input or relay driver.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the dryer.
  2. Clean the lint filter and inspect the full vent run to the outside hood — clear any blockage.
  3. Remove access panel and measure exhaust thermistor resistance; replace if near 0 ohms.
  4. Inspect heater element/relay for welded contacts.
  5. Run a test cycle and verify exhaust temp with a meter probe — should not exceed ~165°F outlet.
  6. Replace main control board if relay sticks closed with no command.
